Located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, has a rich and complex history. Founded in the 18th century, it was designed by a renowned French architect, Théodore Cornut, who worked under the direction of the French military architect Vauban. The city was designed as a port fortress, and its imposing ramparts and unique Mediterranean architecture bear witness to its colonial past.
